Can't get drive shaft seal out

I am having a heck of a time removing a drive shaft seal from a 1964 - 9.5 hp Johnson. I tried the pilot hole screw trick three times and it wont budge. I thought about applying heat to the seal with a heat gun but I am afraid of warping the bearing housing that the seal sits in. The shaft is out because I replaced the shift rod seal. I'm wondering if its the same seal from 1964. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
