can you change a 1983 280 outdrive with a 275 outdrive?

I have an aq225d volvo penta 280 outdrive and I wanted to know if it can be replaced with a 275 volvo penta outdrive?

It is on a 1983 Bayliner 2150 cuddy cabin

Yes, it can be easily fit to the 280 transom shield, but with some clarifications, and with a few questions asked of you first!

Are you changing the entire drive.
Changing transmission only?
Changing lower only?
Will the Intermediate housing remain?

Is the lower unit ratio correct?

The 275 will use the double bolt helmet pin.
The 275 female yoke PDS splines will be fine.
275 uses the short spacer/line cutter.
The flappers in exh bellows is no longer needed.

I am not changing anything out at this time. I found a 275 volvo penta outdirfve for $250.00 I thought this was a great deal and I was going to buy it for a spare. Your thoughts if I should by this is it a good deal?and thanks again

John, is there a hidden message in that? :D

As long as you know that you may run into:
  • A difference in helmet style,
  • A difference in the female yoke,
  • The 275 offers back flow prevention at the outlet,
  • And that the over-all gear ratio change occurs in the lower unit.....
You will be OK.

lol no hidden question...just wanted to know if $250 was a good buy and smart decision....also if i would have a problem using it if i needed to in the future.

John, since the transmission alone could be used, you got yourself a good deal on that basis alone.
You could toss the other parts, and still be ahead.

I'd still say Yes in terms of needing a future lower unit, but not until the $250 drive lower unit gear ratio has been determined.
Your AQ 225 requires the 1.61:1 ratio.
What is the ratio of the $250 drive??????
