Brass connector for shift shaft, in upper housing, how do you get it off, merc 3.0 alpha 1

I was changing water impeller, and I think I jacked up the the inside splines. They do not match the shift shaft splines, they look like one of those old time music readers, Im assuming since it is brass, when I tightned up the drive it wasnt lined up straight and shifted the splines all over the place.
I didnt force anything, followed the manual. Still shifts fine, but the prop clicks when you are in forward and you turn the prop the oppisite way, vise versa for reverse, dont remember if it did that before or not, No clicks when in netural,

ok, well thats a good sign. I thought so but wasnt sure. New to Mecrusier, had OMC for years.

You a one tooth out... you may make it you with your cable...but I wouldn't be surprise if you could....Reason I say that if you make it up in forward, you will have hard time getting strong reverse
