Have a BFP15P XRTA that is overheating at idle. Replaced thermostat, jacket and impeller. Still overheated. Seemed like not enough flow from the water pump. Pulled lower unit and water jacket -- connected garden hose to water tube and water came thru clean with very low water pressure to make sure there was no blockage.

Started pulling the water pump housing off since it's that last piece. Manual says to pull housing off but it will not move up more than an inch to the notch for the impeller key before a solid clunk from somewhere along the shaft. Since the motor is the extended shaft, it has the housing with the needle bearing. Is there a step to be able to pull the housing off?

Realize that it was a mistake to think there was anything wrong with the housing but the seals look a little rough and it looks like I'm going to have to replace it now.

The manual says you should remove the vertical shaft before you remove the water pump housing.

If you were missing any impeller pieces, they may be stuck up the water tube. Forcing water up there may have pushed them even further. Pull the thermostat and blast the opening with a garden hose to back flush the system. You should see a good stream coming out the water tube.

Got it. Thanks. Need some more parts. Flow seemed to be fine using a garden hose connected to the bottom of the water tube when the lower unit was off. Will re-connect the existing pump houseing replace the impeller housing this weekend.
