Base Timing mode

I need to check the timing on my 2003 4.3L and noticed a male ended black wire sitting unused next to the distributor. Is this there to use as a ground on the purple/white wire so the base mode will stay put? Otherwise, I guess a pig tail to a good ground is needed. Thought the open end might be put there by Mercruiser for this procedure, but wasn't sure.

Procedure was read printed, spoke of grounding the purple/white to hold system in base timing mode. I looked yesterday and there is a black male ended wire next to the distributor, thought maybe Mercruiser put it there for this procedure?

I personally dont have that answer. But if you can confirm it is a good ground then go for it.
