Bad Fuel Pump

"I'm running a 79' Evinrude 115 and I think I've discovered what may be causing the poor running...fuel pump gasket was torn. Since the pump is driven by the crankcase pressure, can a bad pump cause fuel to backfeed into the crankcase?"
