Backfires on start?

I'm working with a friend to try to get his boat working again. I'm not sure the exact engine he has, but it's a 4 cyl Volvo Penta inboard.

Anyways, that said... Apparently, a mechanic did not properly tighten the distributor, and it came off when he was on the lake. He retightened it, and the engine turns and tries to start -- but instead of starting, backfires every time it cranks up.

I'm guessing it is a timing issue -- how do we fix this?

Thanks,

Dave

Try a search for setting timing.

Basically you will need to set crank (#1) at TDC and then check under distributor cap for alignment of rotor towards #1 spark plug.....

This should get it started but you need a timing light to set "advance" to specs for your engine...........

This is critical for longevity and performance.

You also could see the mechanic who last worked on it........tell him to fix it RIGHT!
