Are b86 Johnson V4 90hp decent motors Any quirks

"Ranger.... That engine is a good design, but as with any mechanical item, the quality of it depends on the care and upkeep. Be sure to check the compression (100+ psi and even on all cylinders. Spark on all cyls should jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue flame. Check the lower unit for water and/or metal filings. Check the VRO pump to see if its a four wire warning system type (wires leading out the back of it). The old style was a 3 wire system.

" In complete agreement with Joe on that, pick up a decent compression guage w/ the fitting that screws into the hole @ auto-zone or another auto-parts store for $25. I like having the seller leave the engine cold, so when you show up and take a look you know exactly what it will do when you take it home. Also - take a good look at the boat - be sure the floor and transom is solid, and that the hull is sound, don't be afraid to get dirty for a hard look at the underside and bilge.
