This external timing belt thing is a first, I pulled the distributor and hand turned the crank. I see pistons moving and hear some compression yet the distributor drive gear, and all things attached to the serrated belt, remain imobile. Not sure what drives what or whats broke, does the crank drive the belt through the countershaft ? I have exploded drawings of all systems and still confused.

Thanks, D.B. Boatless

Yes, the crankshaft drives one timing belt that drives both the counter shaft and the camshaft.
If the belt has broken, you will not have any rotation of either cam or counter shaft..... and very little compression.
I've not heard of a counter shaft breaking before!

Hopefully Eduardo will see this thread and chime in.

Two guesses:

1) The timing belt has jumped and does not move the countershaft timing gear, or
2) The locating pin between the timing gear and the countershaft is sheared or missing.
