another johnson 50hp question

I have a 1985 Johnson 50hp and I was wondering whats the small wire coming out of the head on the back of the engine? its a single wire next to the upper spark plug...

If you're speaking of a TAN wire with a connector at its end, that would be the overheat sensor. With it disconnected (if this is the TAN wire), your engine could overheat and there would be no way for the warning horn to sound off. The only way you would know the engine was overheating would be when it comes to a screeching seizing halt.

What color is the wire ??

if its a tan wire, find the other end, turn on the key and ground it to the block, alarm should sound
