Alpha 1 gen 2 1995 Upper gear case oil seals

I have a small oil leak following replacement of water pump, I think it's coming from the top gear case,
new seal kit comes tomorrow, I have dismantled the gear box and tapped out the TWO oil seals which were in the bottom of the gear case, (all gears and bearings are in good condition so just need to replace the seals)
Question....which way round do the new oil seals fit, (the old ones came out with the lip of the seals facing up)
I would have thought that the bottom seal would have the lip facing down and the top seal facing up.
The Selcoc manual is no help.
 
After research on how a seal works, it seems that the side that has the spring faces the fluid, so bottom seal would have Spring side down to stop water/exhaust getting up into the gear housing and top seal spring facing up to stop oil leaking down the shaft from the gear housing. I guess!!!
