Airbox silencer for 1960 18hp johnny… worth it to buy?

Does the airbox silencer actually silence the air intake at all? Seems like a silly potential airflow restriction. I don’t have one on my engine and wonder if it’s worth the money to buy one.

It is a silencer. If you don't mind the sound of the intake airflow and reeds, go without it. Actually, it was omitted from some later models anyway. Older models with aluminum hoods could be quite noisy. Fiberglass hoods took care of a lot of that.
