air silencer

What is an air-silencer on a 9.9 1978 Johnson which I just bought without a manual?

The air silencer is a wee box ( black plastic I think ) mounted in front of the carburetor.------------Reed valves make a lot of noise on typical 2 stroke engines and the silencer is installe to somewhat muffle that noise.
