A question about zincs

I just bought this boat and am trying to find out the expected life expectancy of Zinc anodes.
The repair bills the previous owner gave me at the deal said zincs were replaced in June. Is it normal for them to be gone after 6 months? I do not seem to have a transom mounted grounding system. Would this help?

"Bill,
I am not a expert on the subject but can tell you that with my boat 6 months is not bad. A lot depends on where you are. If in a marina with a lot of boats they will go faster if a boat around you has electrical issues.
I used to keep my boat at the local coast guard station and my zinks seemed to melt away where as when I kept her some place else then they would last a lot longer. Hope this helps."

"I suggest you have a marina check your anode performance with a meter--a good marina will have one. Improper anode selection will eat the anodes quickly--like using high magnesium content anodes in salt water. As Paul stated, a bad power cable in the water near your boat will do it as well.

Finally, you might consider installing an electronic protection system such as Mercathode. It uses a small amount of battery power to offset the galvanic action.

"Bill:

All good advise. The measurements Jeff suggests will help locate the source. If the source is the marina or your slipmate, you can fix it by 1) complaining or 2) relocating.

Being as you are hauled best thing you can do is to make sure your existing Bonding system, on the boat, is in good shape. You'll have to address the measurement in the spring.

The other item is if the marina doesn't have the reference electrode, find a good marine electrician. if that comes up empty, find a galvanic corrosion specialist. Either should have the electrode needed."
