Pulled flywheel from 85 90 johnson and cleaned timing advance and applied lite coat of bearing grease to bottom, also replaced water pump. It started right up and ran at idle for about 15 seconds and then revved wide open by itself. What have I done wrong.

Did you torque the flywheel nut to 102.5 FT-LBS ?

No, I don't own a torque wrench, I'll get one tomorrow.

Really? 1/2 (one half pounds) ? Is it that critical? My torque wrench is only accurate to within + /- 4% of its setting! I thought I had just "upgraded" from my former needle w/scale version. Do I need to invest in a precise one?

Just kidding.----Tork is specified at 100 to 105 ft-lbs.----I know all about variance in torque wrenches / thread pitch / thread condition / lubrication ETC ,ETC.----Did you remove flywheel or check timing pointer to see if key is sheared , yes or no ?

Were you dinking around with the throttle when it started to rev?

The tapers must be CLEAN and DRY when assembling and torque is important !

I have a torque wrench now and found how to build a wrench to hold flywheel.I plan to pull flywheel.and.start over.

I tried to answer but I don't see it anywhere, but no I wasn't dinking with the throttle.
