"will a stator plate off of a 1967 9.5 hp. work on a 1971 9.5 hp. / I put new points in the 1971 and one set of points does not line up (when the contact is made,on the points its not square when they make contact, I have an extra stator or can I do something to the points"

"The stator? plate.... retaining ring that the armature plate that the points/coils/condensers attach to. Yes, they will interchange.

The points not making a perfect contact has nothing to do with the stator plate assembly. Suspect bent points.

There is no stator on the 9.5hp engines.

Set the points as follows. Have the flywheel key aligned with the fiber rubber portion of the ignition points. Adjust the gap so that a .020 gauge will pass thru but a .022 will not. Should there be any question of the points being dirty (touching the contact with your finger would cause them to be dirty), clean them with a small brush and acetone or lacquer thinner.

NOTE: Should the operating cam have a small portion on it with the word "SET" imprinted, align this portion with the fiber rubbing portion instead of the flywheel key.
