Son in law his a stump at about half throttle. The shifter is hard to move in and out of gear and the prop won't spin freely in neutral. This a tiller model. Prop was new and shows no damage. Curious if this will be an expensive repair and also what is damaged.tia

Are you turning the prop while trying to shift it?------He may not have hit a stump at all.------Sounds to me that something broke in the gearcase.-----Drain and inspect gear oil.----Look for shiny bits in the oil.----Or bits on the magnet.----These gearcases are not robust.------Here I would take that apart without hesitation !

He definitely hit a stump...said the motor kicked up.

Is the front of gearcase dented in?

Here I would take the gearcase apart.----No question.------Sounds like something broke inside the gearcase.
