"i am looking to install a 1990 mercruiser 4.3 engine assembly, complete with exhaust and accessories into an 88 volvo penta outdrive that had a 305 v-8 installed. is there going to be a problem with the exhaust manifolds(new sierra part #18-1952)mating up to the volvo y-pipe? would a spacer and new risers be a fix? i plan on using volvo mounts,bellhousing,flywheel,and coupler from the 305. can it be done?the guys on the mercruiser forum said you guys would know! thanks for any input or warnings BEFORE I TRY IT!!"

"Unlikely that the Sierra M/C exhaust manifolds will be of the correct angle for the '88 Volvo Penta AQ 225, 260 style Y pipe.
The 225 Y pipe and Volvo exhaust manifolds are somewhat unique with regard to the down-angle of the riser, the unique forward turn at the top of the Y (and the close proximity to the riser) not to mention the metric outside diameter.
IMO, it would be best to use the Volvo AQ series 4.3L mans/risers for that same vintage, and make it simple for yourself.

Then maybe sell the Sierra M/C manifolds.

Also, the 4.3L engine will require the 153 tooth flywheel.
The 168 tooth will not fit inside of the Volvo AQ 225 flywheel cover.
So yes, if the 5.0L flywheel is balanced correctly for the 4.3L, it may work.
The 5.0L starter motor will then work on the 4.3L also.

The 5.0L engine harness should work on the 4.3L.

If the boat is small (20, 22, 23 foot or so) the lower unit V-8 ratio (1.61:1) should be OK for the 4.3L engine.

I'd strongly encourage your to install new Primary Drive Shaft bearings/seals while doing this."

It appears as though he had these set up for a full Closed Cooling system (see riser raw water feeds), but this could be changed back for your use!
I see that your profession is plumbing..... so this should be an easy one for you!
