89 mercruiser with alpha 1 outdrive.

I cannot get it into forward or reverse. When I engage the shift the interupt works as intended. When I slowly put it in either forward or reverse I hear the drive gear trying to go in but It seems as though the shift cable is out of adjustment. How do I adjust the cable.

if the shift interupter is stalling the engine when shifting INTO GEAR its doing its job and you need a lower shift cable
in most cases.
