89 85 horse static timing

I replaced the powerhead on my motor with a rebuild and need to know how to get the timing right. I have had the motor running, I do not want to run the engine at wot to set the timing, as it is not yet broke-in. The manuel tells me how to set static timing, but the engine will not turn over in gear. I have disconnected the nuetral safety switch, but still nothing. What is the trick?

Getting a remote starter switch and jumping it at the solenoid will do the trick.J

Thanks J, I will give it a try --also, I'm happy to hear I am not alone in my opinion of seloc manuals,but still better than nothing

built a remote starter switch from a 110 light switch and a couple feet of wire-- worked great! timing is adjusted right. tomorow I will get it on the lake and finish the other 9 hours of break-in. thanks again for the help.
