I let my motor idle for 6 to 7 min. and the head never even warmed up. Can this cause the motor to run rich. I put my fingers on the head and it was ice cold.

Thermostat must be stuck open.

Its a 1986 Johnson 28 SPL.

is there directions on changing the thermostat on line?

thanks for all the help

Nothing to it really ---------Just a bunch of small screws on the cover of the cylinderhead.-----------Remove the cover and inspect / test / replace the thermostat.------------Just need a gasket as well.----------------Nothing to be scared of on this job.

thanks for the info. I am going to change it this week.

In addition to Racerone's usual on target reply, I would add.....

If any of those bolts/screws are frozen tight, to avoid breaking them, heat the surrounding aluminum area with a hand held propane torch. This will help to free the bolt/screw.
