81 Merc 20 hp timing

Removed flywheel it is bolted to a 8 bolt hub on crankshaft how is it reinstalled does it need to be in a certain place for timing cannot find any marks on hub or flywheel thanks

It sure has to be put back exactly as it was.------It does control the timing !---------Look for matching rust / paint marks around the bolt holes to see if you can then put it back as it was.

You could put the top cylinder at TDC and then use the tinming marks that are on the flywheel.
