I have removed and reinstalled the recoil starter on my 1988 8 hp mariner from time to time without problems. After recent reassembly the starter rope pulls out and recoils fine, but the one way bearing inside the recoil assembly that rides over the shaft to the flywheel is not grabbing and thus engaging the flywheel.
This is not the cam action recoil starter assembly found on some other 8 hp mariners. Any ideas? Any ideas on removing and cleaning and lubercating this one way bearing. There is a needle bearing (black cage) above and below the one way bearing (red cage). Thanks!
