black raised center switch. Does anyone have a clue what this switch is for. It has no detents, it only turns like a thumb screw and is plastic."

It may also be a (release switch) to allow you to engage the throttle without actually putting it in gear - since it certainly doesn't sound like a trim button...

"it does sound like the shift tensioner. It keeps your throttle in a specific position while cruising so that the throttle doesn't move. I would say, do whatever Graham says!! He's the man."
