6 HP 1992 Mercury Thermostat

Heating problem on a fishing trip
Motor whent wekll for 4 hrs then over heated.
Removed thermostat and whent like a clock for next 6 days
Is it neccessary for a thermostat on this motor ???

No. Many people leave them out to prevent them from sticking in the closed position.

These models "did NOT" have a thermostat from factory.

Having said that, any motor will always run better with a thermostat (better idle and better running when cold) but the 15 horse and under 2 stroke Mercs don't seem to mind...

Parts books seems to show a thermostat and the poster said he took one out of his motor ??

Yep, but didn't come that way from factory. It was an "option" on all 15 horse and under - probably saved Merc about 50 cents a motor - 22 bucks to add or replace, plus the gasket of course..
