59 10 hp evinrude thermostat

Got old 10 hp running really good and was reading posts about these old engines when I noticed one talking about stuck thermostat. I check my engine and found the thermostat had been removed, So here's the question is it nessacary to have a thermostat. Als doe a worn prop affect the speed/thrust of the outboard.

The thermostat needs to be in the motor and a worn prop will affect speed/thrust.
