"The only way you can remove the engine without taking off the outdrive is if you have enough room to slide the engine forward 6 inches or more, enough for the drive shaft to clear the coupler. However when you go to reinstall the engine you must do an engine alignment check with the tool first so the outdrive has to come off anyway. May as well do it right the first time. There's no way you could run a drive off a 2.3 on a 5.8 unless someone did some changes to the gearing inside but I'm also pretty sure the 2.3 was a smaller drive I would think the 5.8 would end up tearing the guts out of it!"
