50hp mercury wont keep running

have a 50 hp need to always ch

have a 50 hp need to always chock to start runs good for about 20 secs then you hit chock again it will keep running if you dont it quits you need to fast idle to get in gear to keep running also changed water pump believe or not it works but wont lock in when in reverse really could use some help Thanks

"remove and clean carbs, use fresh gas. Its starving for fuel, continued use will ruin it. We need a year/serial number. The reverse lock can be adjusted but more likely the cam on the shift shaft was installed one tooth off the last time the lower unit was removed."

this engine sat for about 15 y

this engine sat for about 15 years i took the carbs off and cleaned them out bottom carb real bad shape it ran good for awhile then started to act up this is afriend of mine so i'll get the year and serial and get back thanks
