"Worked fine all last summer. Now, first time out it won't engage reverse. Lever moves and motor accelerates but still in neutral. Fwd works fine. Watched while the lever was moved to rev position and the other end thingie seems to be moving as usual. Any suggestion as the best starting place?"

"Warren;
If your lower shift cable has become stiff, it may not move enough to engage reverse.
Try undoing the eye end of the lower shift cable, and pull it all the way out, while someone turns the prop CW. This will tell you if the lower unit is shifting OK or not.
If it is shifting, then you need to adjust the linkages. You can move the pin that the lower shift cable attaches to up a little in it's elongated slot. This effectively increases the cable travel. Also try putting some 2-4-C lube on the cable end where is goes into the barrel. This might free it up a little and help it engage.
Let us know if you need the complete adjustment procedure, but the information above should do it.
