I have an 87 johnson 40 hp that i have owned for over ten years. The vro had been bypassed prior to me buying it. I have always mixed my fuel manually and have not had trouble in a decade. Now when i pump the fuel bulbe fuel actually comes out of the top of the FUEL PUMP(I BELIEVE NOT SURE WHICH IS VRO OR FUEL). It starts fine and dies quickly of course, my question is can i remove the fuel pump/vro system entirely and replace with a non vro pump. I can fabricate a bracket if necessary for a non vro pump, but would like any input i can get.

There is a location on the side of the top cylinder to mount a conventional pump !------Look for one off a 48 HP model 2 cylinder motor like yours.

Check right here on this site for a parts diagram. And you don't have to remove the pulse limiter.
