40 hp Evinrude 4 stroke

hello I'm hoping someone is able.... to help me I recently purchased a 20 foot pontoon with a 40 horse Evinrude 4-stroke I replace the water pump and I'm not getting water out of the back of the engine to signify that the water pump is working however the pump is working I can take the main hose off the engine is cool but I'm not getting the stream out of the back all my lines seem to be clear I'm just worried that I might possibly burn this engine up any help would be greatly appreciated
