4.3 exaust

I am wondering if there is any specific reason for the cast coupler between the 2 rubber couplers between the exaust manifold and the leg and would it work just as well if it was just a longer rubber to connect up the exaust.

Thanks but mine are fine, I am just wandering what is the purpose of them,and if it will be all right to run without them. If I had a similer situation I could just stick a chunk of hose on there to get home. 45 miles is a long way on one engine
