4.3 Chevy OMC Cobra coupler

Starcraft Chieftain, beautiful runner I bought last year and ran a few times. Coming in about 2/3 throttle I took a hard hit on freighter wake. Jumped out of drive and started screaming shortly after. I shut it down, opened engine cover to burning rubber smell and smoke, was able to clearly see small rubber shavings from coupler sizzling. Was able to engage drive and get back in but will only stay in drive at idle, any increase in throttle and it jumps out of gear. Can this be caused by the bad coupler itself or at all, and is there another issue I need to track down. I'm a carpenter and mechanically inclined, but a virgin with stern drives. I know I have to pull the engine to change the coupler and that's about where I'm at. Any help is very appreciated.

Check all your mounts on engine.

Any coupler that's made to fit a GM will work. All stern drive splines are the same across Mercruiser, OMC, Volvo.
