318 Ignition Module Identification

Hi All,

New to the forum. My dad picked up a 73 Burnscraft houseboat & I've been nominated the mechanic!

We recently lost spark when it rained hard & the engine got wet. I threw a coil at it when the old one's resistance was way out of spec; but it didn't change the no-spark, as I should've guessed. Anyways I'm not sure if this ignition module is stock as the harness has been hacked up a little; either way I'm looking to get it replaced! I have seen some interesting info about the GM HEI conversion in various places & I may consider this down the road, but we need to get it running by the end of the month so we can move marinas.

Googling around it seems that these aren't available new anymore :-/

Suggestions?

What's wrong with the stock set up? The Chrysler modules are dirt cheap and work pretty well. I keep a couple of spares on board, just in case. (At less than 30 bucks a pop, why not?)

Raccer, you do not have an electronic ignition system with a module. If you did, it would very likely be Chrysler's VR system.

You have the old kettering (contact points) style.
The dead-give-a-way is the condensor and contact points cam.

These are extremely easy to trouble-shoot.

Agreed you most certainly have points. very easy to work on. Im not certain what that is you have pictured. Are you getting voltage to the coil? You coul try supplying 12v to the coil and see if you get spark. if not check the contacts on the points bot for burning and opening and closing fully as the engine is slowly rotated. If they look good, put a new condensor on. Either way these item are considered tune up parts and should be checked/adjusted at regular intervals as well as spares kept on board.

That is definitely a voltage regulator, I have two of them. There is no module associated with that point type setup. Hopefully a tuneup will sort things out.
