I want to install a voltmeter to monitor the charging voltage. What is the maximum voltage I can expect to see for this engine?

The maximum voltage you can expect to see for a typical 12-volt automotive electrical system is around 14.7 volts. This voltage is produced by the alternator, which is responsible for charging the battery and providing power to the electrical system.
I have found on the Internet the following breakdowns of the expected voltage ranges for different engine conditions:
  • Engine off: 12.4 to 12.8 volts
  • Engine idling: 13.5 to 14.5 volts
  • Engine under load: 14.0 to 14.7 volts
So, if you see a voltage reading consistently above 14.7 volts, it could indicate a problem with the voltage regulator, which is responsible for controlling the alternator's output voltage. A high voltage can damage the battery and other electrical components.

On the other hand, if you see a voltage reading consistently below 12.4 volts, it could indicate a problem with the alternator itself or with the battery.
