2002 Yamaha 150HP OX66 - No trim down from throttle only

Guys,

Back with a weird problem.

Had the boat out a few times this year. Tonight, halfway thru the cruise, the trim down from the binnacle stopped working. Sometimes it clicks once for half a second, but mostly no response.

Up on the binnacle responds fine. Up AND down work on the side of the motor.

Any ideas? I'm at a loss so far.

Thanks,
Terry

It's the switch or the relay. Find the power trim & tilt relay. If you're not sure which one it is, just start removing the relays one at a time, and try to trim up or down from any switch. Once you find the right one, remove it and jump the 2 connection points that are receiving 12V from the battery. If the trim down still doesn't work (and the switch on the engine works fine) then you know it's probably the switch (or a connection/wire between the switch and the relay). If it does work, then the relay is your problem.

Correction. You want to jump the connection point that is receiving 12V with the other 2 (one at a time) that aren't receiving 12V. That simulates pressing the up or down switch. Sorry about that.

Got it, thanks. Pulled the windshield and dash tonight and confirm that the switch has poor continuity on the down side. Jumped 12V to the pins on the boat/harness side and motor ran up and down without issue. Old siwtch is out, and new switch is on order.

Thanks,
Terry

Or just check the throttle switch contact points. Carbon build up on the points will cause intermittent issues w/continuity.
