"I just installed a rebuilt 2 barrel carb on 5.0 liter merc. It started after a few cranks. There was a intermittent puff of air sound coming from the portside. upon checking the spark plugs , we found out they were loose because the mechanic did not tighten them when he did the compression tests. The puff of air was coming from the vicinity of the 2nd plug from the rear on the port side. .. every other second at idle. We tightened the plugs, but not sure if it got a little kinked, becuase same problem. Someone at the dock thinks it maybe a bad gasket on the port manifold or a whole in the manifold. 1) If a manifold leaks will there be an intermittent puff of air or will it be constant? 2) or should I dedicate attention to the spark plug? 3) what is a good way to narrow the cause of the problem, before pulling the manifold.
