1998 Johnson 130 prop shaft seal

I am replacing my prop shaft seal and I am trying to determine if it should sit against the bearings in the bearing carrier or should I leave space. I forgot to note the position when I pulled the old seal.The seal is the single seal version. I am afraid of getting the seal crooked if not seated against bearings. TIA
