1998 25HP Johnson runs well, but....

This engine has performed well for many years....suddenly I find an excellent running (idling) /starting etc engine which will not accelerate. I exhausted all the usual suspects; fuel,connections, filters, replaced plugs and hoses.
Seems at this time to be an internal problem....where to start looking?

I've got the same problem. Runs great on the low end, starts right up, purrs great except for the OMC hiccup but has no power. Will only push the same boat at 6 mph where it use to push it 22 mph. I'm hopeing it's the power pack, I'm replaceing it tomorrow.

Usually plugged high speed jet in carb. Usually complete carb cleaning & new kit solves this.

Did you check each plug for spark? One bad cylinder will make a big difference.
Clean out the carb and make sure main jet is not plugged or any other passages.
Unless you loose a part or tear a gasget and the carb is not leaking fuel or over flowing not necessary to buy a carb kit.
