1995 Mariner 9.9.....no spark

A buddy of mine gave me this 9.9 Mariner because he couldn't start it.......there is no spark......I was getting a voltage reading from the stator but noting at the spark plugs.......it seemed unlikely that both coils would go at the same time so we figured the module was a good guess......I put in an after market module but there is still no spark......the on/off switch was broken so I have eliminated it temporarily......the stop button in the handle seems to be operating properly......don't know what direction to go in from here......any ideas?
 
Be sure the stop button in the handle isn't connected to anything. If still no spark, check the trigger coils for resistance.

I have checked the stop button in the handle and did test the trigger and stator......looks like the stator is the problem......you had me going in the right direction though...thanks
