1992 40 hp oil injected merc

looking at one of these.looks ok ,any issues or concerns to look out for ?

Not a known problem motor. Make sure you ask what kind of gas they use, do it tactfully. Test run on lake, if possible. I would look at plugs to check color and if possible do a compression test. If you can't run it, you should check spark......good strong 7/16 inch minimum arc. Check skeg for damage and previous repair. Check prop shaft for wobble when you slowly turn it. Expect to do a water pump impeller replacement If it hasn't been done recently. Check fuel filter for contaminants. Check all wires and hoses for integrity, you know.....the normal stuff. Mice been in there? Has it been stored awhile?

thanks for the reply, great info.I had planned on replacing water pump but never thought about checking prop shaft for true

Check lower unit oil for water, or white colored, which means water has been mixed into the gear case.
