1991 Yamaha 85 , NO REVERSE

Hey everyone, looking for a little bit of guidance and what to do on my motor, the boat has reverse completely fine ot of the water, but when the boat is under load it has no reverse and you can hear the gears missing. I’ve adjusted the cable and had a mechanic check it out but he is lost as well, anyone that has ran into this issue I’d appreciate if you could give me any insight. Thanks
