Helped me attack the problem (the fuel line to the engine had a bad connector replaced it and all is well).
During this time I added oil to the fuel in case the auto oil was not working. Will this cause any problems?

Adding oil to the fuel is a good idea for older motor. It should not give you any problem. Unless you put too much oil in then it will smokes even more. 2 strokes, smoke is good... 4 strokes, smoke is no good.
