1990 100hp johnson dropped cyl test

hello i was trying to find out if i have a dropped cyl i pulled one of the plugs put a bolt in the boot and tryed to start the motor. i did not ground the bolt. all i got was a click and then nothing no power. what could have caused this? any ideas? thanks

wanted to let everyone know i found the problem it was the wires to the key switch. now i can go back to the other problems.
