1989 Force 50 HP outboard

I have a 1989 Force 50m HP outboard and does anyone know IF there's a thermostat in it? Also, when I put earmuffs on it, it doesn't appear to get water into the engine thru the pickup. I have an idea about how to do it differently, but I'm curious if it has to be warmed up to expel water or not.

The parts book shows a thermostat.-------Install a new impeller and test run in a deep bucket or the lake.

The 50 needs a special muff.
It looks like a regular one with the sides cut off.
Like Racer said deep in a bucket or in the lake.
It's not a self priming pump.
