1989 Force 150hp,,Help please

On my Force 150 there is a noise from the prop shaft. Motor not running in neutral hand spin the prop, free spins about 1/4 turn then sounds like it hits something has a clanging noise. does this in both directions at about 1/4 turn is this a big problem, just play or normal ?? once at 1/4 turn i can still freely spin prop just sounds as if it has slop till the 1/4 turn mark.. When motor is running rev motor and it rattles loudly like a bad bering from prop shaft area... what is this ??? PLEASE HELP

You can disconect the shifter cable and put it in and out of gear (quickly) by moving the shift slide inside the engine and see if it works good that way. If so, adjust and your good.
