1988 Johnson 6hp lower unit

I need to ship a 1988 6hp lower unit. Shift rod and driveshaft are not needed. I've never had one of these apart before. Can I pull the shift rod and driveshaft and ship it? Will things fall out place?

Removal of the drive shaft is prevented by the impeller drive key (#36) so you will have to remove the water pump in order to withdraw it.

The shift rod is retained by the clip #32 you will have to remove the gearcase top cover to access this
