1987 454 ignition amplifier/upgrade

Thinking of changing the ignition system in my 87 454/330 formula to something newer. my question is what exactly does my ignition amplifier do? if I put in a new HEI distributor can I just eliminate it. was told I would need at least #12 wire to distributor, will my current hot wire in the harness ( from the key switch I'm assuming)be adequate?

thanks

Re: 1987 ignition amplifier/upgrade

if it is the TB IV, why change it if it is working?

The amplifer does two things: 1) takes the pulses from the trigger and fires the coil, 2) advances the timing as the rpms increase.

Depends upon what you replace it with; if your new parts needs a #12 AWG, you'll have to add it. i wouldn't open the harness to do it.
