I sure could use some help. Went out on the big lake for a test ride on Sunday ( first time out this year ) . Boat started find ran very well , for about 1 hr. Started going back in at 3/4 open tack started jumping all over the place then engine started runing rough, then stoped.

points where new - shot now,

Where dose the coil get it power from when engine is runing?
If I were to put a balest resitor in where do they go?

When new ignition points burn out prematurely, two things come to mind:

The points somehow got grease or dirt on them.

The points were set too close. (Dwell would have been wrong)

Or both of the above.

Put in another (New) set, many folks seem to be suffering from quality issues these days especially those with the solenoids. Set the dwell, check the timing. You should already have a resistance wire in there coming from the alternator, possible a bad start solenoid could be giving the coil a full 12V all the time bypassing the resistance wire?
