1985 johnson

runs wide open when brought down from half throttle to neutral, turn the key off, still runs wot, have to pull cowl, turn off elec choke lever(red), starts up and idles fine...........bill............50 hp twin cyl.....2 carbs

u need to verify,...
1. throttle cable from box,returning linkage to idle position
2.timer base moving smoothly/returning to ide pos.
3.carb butterflies--not sticking,moving smooth,and in sync w/ea other,closed fully at idle
 
pulled flywheel, everything set perfect(like new)timing plate works smooth...pulled carbs & reed plate, small gap in a few reeds, reset reeds to close, gasket's good and seal's fine........still runs wot, untill engine does a backfire........and slows engine down.........or have to turn the "red lever" on the elec. choke.....its pulling air and fuel from somewhere !!!!:rolleyes:
 
take a spray bottle of carb cleaner, with the motor running, spray cc, around all the seams and where a gasket meets metal, and around the fuel fitting see if the rpms increase, if so thats where it's sucking air at.
